    Hello everyone,

I am looking for a good way to backup my photos/important docs. I have discovered that an external hard drive seems the way to go. I would like to pay under $100.00 dollars and would like 600GB-1TB USB 2.0. I need it to be really reliable. What are the best brands...feel free to post newegg/tigerdirect links.

I have a $100 500gb Western Digital Passport (465GB formatted) that is compact and powered by it's USB cable(No messy AC adapters) I love this drive's tiny size and portability

If you don't mind a larger drive that uses an AC adapter a $110 1TB Western Digital (930GB formatted) is also a good choice

I don't have any affiliation with Newegg or Western Digital. Speaking from experience both companies have always done well by me.

What's the up time so far on that drive? The drive inside is your standard NB drive. The problem is its encased with not ventilaton. I'm pretty sure it could not possibly have the same longevity as a drive placed inside your NB. At least it has room to breathe. As a periodic backup yes its a good idea. As something that runs all the time when the NB is in use, I think you are asking for a catastrophe.
