I'm having a problem with my External HD on my server. It is a WD 5400-7200RPM drive in a Rosewill enclosure. Worked fine until today. I unplugged everything and put it in my car to bring to college.

When I got to set it up ... it didn't do anything ... I get the error USB Device not Recognized.

Plugging it into both laptops work fine. any suggestions?

You tried connecting the HDD in college ??
Maybe the computers there might have limited account priveleges and not allowing the drivers to be installed.

I was just wondering if I could try pulling the driver that the computer uses for another usb external drive? And then import it?

i had this problem with mine as well. the enclosure broke. The sub and esata controller in it just died. (the drive may have died as well idk) but that was my problem.

first usb died and i used esata, then esata died and i put it into the machine. idk if the drive works yet or not.

Have you tried a different USB port?

I'm lending this thread as I have a similar issue..

I upgraded the drive on my laptop, and decided to clean / format the old one. Did it with Acronis and everything seemed to go well, I thought. But now "My computer" won't detect / show it when plugged with an enclosure (same as I formatted in). I checked the drivers and Vista says they are correct.

    So to be exact:
    - The enclosure is connected, green light burning.
    - The computer detects it, but only as hardware but not as a drive.

How can I make Vista (SP1) detect it as a ext. drive?

    Thanks in advance!

Check under Disk Management and see if it's recognized there, may need initializing.

Yes, I can see it in Device Manager. I tried to update the driver there, but Vista said it is the best available. Where can I do the initializing? I'm quite clueless right now, any suggestion is welcome!

Problem solved. A bit embarrassing.. I forgot to create a partition on the disk, meaning the entire disk was unallocated space. Well works now.

had a similar problem until I changed the enclosure. It is caused by the usb port not providng enough electricity or something like this.
