Should I get a usb or a pcmcia type connection for an external dvd player? I'm going to use it to copy dvds because I have a dvd burner on my laptop.

I think its best to get a USB connection because they are common, and I havent seen not that many PCMCIA type of connection.

You should make your own dvd player, with just simple USB enclosure and regular desktop DVD drive.

I created a dvd burner, and saved some $$$.

why do you want an external player if you already have a burner?

I think this person is copying dvd (hopfully legally) straight through the disc, w/o having going through, copy the dvd to the hd and burn it.

I am not really sure about the speed, or I doubt it doesnt matter.

Never tried PCMCIA conected burners. But with USB I safely burn at 8x. But 16x is out of the question.

When reading my drive maxes out at around 9x when benchmarking speed.

I really doubt PCMCIA will do much better. and 8x isn't that bad.

yeah, but it doesn't really copy straight through, right? it still writes an image to the disc first, no?

Firewire is known to be a litte more stable if you got it. You can use your laptop drive to rip DVDs. Programs like DVDShrink or DVDDecrypter don't burn on the fly anyway.
