WARNING!!! If you're stupid with the below information, and wreck your laptop by overclocking or underclocking it, it's not my fault! Use at your own risk!
    ---
There are many lucky people who have been able to increase their CPU speeds by using setfsb (or similar) on an HM55 chipset. Unfortunately, I wasn't one of them. I have an Acer Aspire 8943G with a i5 430m in it. A nice CPU, but a little lacking in power. I was especially annoyed because I had found my clock generator thingy and everything, but it wasn't supported (SLG8SP595V). Another option was to use ThrottleStop, however it seemed to do nothing (for me). For some, this can be fixed by simply turning off cpu power management stuff in the BIOS, but I didn't have that option.

I had all but given up on overclocking my laptop, but then I came across an article about how SSD performance sucks on HM55 platforms (I have an SSD in mine) which mentioned a couple of ways to fix the performance issues. This is where the fun starts. The article mentioned a registry tweak that stopped the CPU from idling.

Now, before we apply this tweak, lets make sure of a couple of things:
The laptop is well ventilated (to reduce the chance of overheating)
    You have ThrottleStop installed
Okay, the tweak is quoted below:

"The next set of tests was performed by applying a registry tweak that prevents the CPU from idling.
In order to do that, open the registry, go to:

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power\PowerSettings\54533251-82be-4824-96c1-47b60b740d00\5d76a2ca-e8c0-402f-a133-2158492d58ad]

and change the “Attributes” from 1 to 0. Then, change the advanced power settings like the screenshot below:

(All credit for this bit goes to Brian from storagereview.com, link to original article here - Also, I have been informed that StamatisX on this forum should receive credit as well [Thanks svl7])

After you apply this tweak, open up ThrottleStop, and you should now be able to set your multiplier to something quite low (to save battery):

Or something high, like turbo (turbo boost speed, not recommended for 24/7!)

I hope that you have found this info useful, and I apologize if someone else has already figured this out (I haven't seen it anywhere, but better safe than sorry)

Seeing as you can't go past the turbo boost clocks, this isn't really overclocking it... The CPU would automatically increase its clocks to those speeds if it needs to.

Yes, but you can force the CPU to be on that speed all the time, instead of relying on the system to do it for you. It is better than nothing for those of us who've had nothing else work

Has anyone tried this with a quadcore CPU?

Actually the guide has been written by StamatisX, and if I remember correctly it is already posted somewhere here, probably in the SSD section.
