    hi guys
i am planning to buy a new HDD for my notebook but i choose to buy a portable one but my friend told me that it is better to buy external HDD then i'll just buy a hard disk enclosure.

    well my question is...
is it guaranteed to buy what my friend told me because i want larger size of hdd or i will just buy portable because it doesn't need power cord..?

one more question can i run games on this both HDD?
and can i boot my os both of this two?

    thnx....

In my view an external HDD and Portable are the same (both ar portable) LOL!

Anyway I would go for a USB/Firewire powered HDD then you won't have to worry about an additional power source.

Yes you could run games off and boot an OS off an external HDD. Make sure your PC will allow booting from a USB/Firewire device first though!

Sorry dont understand what you mean by 'is it guaranteed to use the enclosure' ???

Depends on the manufacturer.. go for one that has a good warranty.

    Maxtor/Seagate/Western Digital

sorry bro if you didn't understand what i've said. coz i am not really particular to the terms..hehehe...

    actually it goes like this..

i own a laptop and a desktop then i wanted to have data storage on my laptop particularly..so at first i thought to buy the portable one "usb no need of power supply" but here comes my friend gave me an idea about buying internal hard disk and a hard disk enclosure coz it is cheaper and i could still access the HD of my desktop to my laptop..

but i am wondering if HD w/ hard disk enclosure is better than portable HD??

my purpose of upgrading higher HD size is for data storage...

    hope u understand me...thnx

I've had an external Western Digital 400GB for about 3/4 years now and a 160GB Toshiba portable since February. I only got the portable so I didn't have to use a small (below 8gb) flash drive at school. If you plan on taking the hard drive with you a lot, get the portable.

Either will work fine, go with whatever is more cost effective aka cheaper :)

Performance of an external HDD using the USB interface will all be very similar since the interface is the bottleneck.

I buy my HDDs and enclosures separately. I'm no making sure the enclosures have USB and eSATA interface (which is much faster). What I usually do is to put the new HDD into the computer (after cloning the old HDD) and then the old HDD goes into the enclosure.

so u mean u'll make ur new HD as ur master HD..while your old will be in the enlosure..what about the usage??hehehe..can i use the HD within the eclosure for long time or there is a certain limit of time unlike connecting it directly to the motherboard.. coz my HD in the desktop i am using it for more that 2 days open...but it is still ok then what about i will use the HD in the enclosure. will it just be the same??-->no limit??? i mean no risk of getting it malfuction?

thnx bro for the reply i really need to make sure to buy the correct one..i don't have yet experience buying HD "ever since"

Here's a great deal on a 320gb portable drive which powers off the USB. SOME portable hard drives (ie iOmega Ego) require you to use 2 USB...one to power and one for data. This one only uses a single USB.

    I have several of them.

Yes, assuming that it is 2.5" HDD.

However, one qualification: 2.5" HDDs can have either a PATA / IDE connector or a SATA connector. You won't know what is inside a ready-made portable HDD. If you make your own then you need to make sure than the enclosure and the HDD have the same connector.

And, if you put the newer, bigger, HDD into your notebook then the starting place is the connector for the existing HDD. Device Manager will give you the HDD model number and Google will find you the specifications.

Cloning the HDD means that everything on your existing HDD gets copied to the new one so you can put it in and just start up. Here is the very quick guide.

Muns, sorry for the late reply.. been soooooo busy!!!

If its just for transporting data that I would go for a USB or preferably a firewire powered external HDD which would be in a caddy. There will be two options. 1. 2.5" laptop size HDD or 2. 3.5" Desktop size. For ease of use I would personally go with the smaller one. Here is a link to one which sould do

    Firewire - http://www.freecom.com/ecproduct_detail.asp?ID=3799&CatID=8020&sCatID=1146187&ssCatID=1147827

thnx bro..ur back...well i made a decision i would buy the HD and a HD enclosure 3.5" coz it is more cheaper i am not fun of bringing it everyday..may weekly only...well my only question is does they don't make diiffer totally except for their size..both of them produces also heat isn't it??so it is not dangerous for my HD to blew out or to be destroyed when i'll be using it for couple of time??

    thnx EVERY9..

i do understand sorry also for being demanding.. ;) :D

    GOD bless you all
