What processor do you have maybe?

If it's the ULV or LV processor, it's most likely soldered. But if you have the regular T7xxx processor then it's socketed.

Well, I dont have one yet, but the question may make the decision to purchase a bit easier. I am looking at an X61 with a T7100 CPU. The hope it to be able to upgrade to a faster CPU.

However, I just read that the "Santa Rosa refresh" coming in 2008 is required to support Penryn mobile CPUs. Hmm. Perhaps it would be more prudent to wait for those models...

So if you wanna upgrade later, then obviously get the T7xx series. Or you can wait a little untill Penryn comes out.
