Hey guys i am very disappointed... i have a Dell 1720 that i bought with 1 gig of ram i opened it today in order to know what brand of memory the computer came with so i could buy the same... i was hoping to find Crucial or Kingston or maybe Corsair... but i found a brand i had never heard or seen before in my entire life Hynix or something like that.. is that a reputable brand? or is just Dell trying to save costs? on the other hand i found some nice memory upgrades for my laptop both are kingston could anybody tell me the technical difference? thanks so much!

    this one Kingston 4 gigs DDR2 667 sells for $77.99 + shipping

Hynix, is a generic brand. They are used in dell systems, because they are cheap. Dell and most manufacturers skimp out on the memory quality and jack up the prices, so that they generate more revenue.
You do not want to buy hynix memory for your system. Crucial, Corsair, Kingston and OCZ are all reputable brands of high performance memory which you should choose from.

I would get two of these, but both you mentioned will work fine
These will save you a whole $2, when you buy two of them.

I am going to agree with the main point of K-trons answer. I will take a little issue though on his evaluation of Hynix. They are one of the 5 main DRAM manufactures in the world.

    Samsung largest
    Hynix 2nd largest
    Qimonda AG (Aeneon) 3rd largest
    Micron (Crucial)
    Elipda Memory

Notice they are the second largest in the world. They are not this big because they don't make good RAM and are not 2nd by selling just Hynix RAM. They wholesale DRAM to Consumer RAM manufacturers. Of K-Trons list, Crucial, Corsair, Kingston and OCZ only Crucial makes their own DRAM (Micron). So when you open up your cool new Corsair, Kingston or OCZ don't be shocked if the DRAM was made buy Hynix. Unless you know your system is picky and you have good experience with a certain brand buying "Brand Name" RAM is highly overated. As always this is notebook advice as Desktops and tweaking well that is a whole different issue. Hynix is fine and yes DeLL gets it at a very low price and sells at a very high price. Just my to cents and if not worth it remember I didn't charge you. ;)

And on the link to Corsair Value Select, Corsair is not even trying to trick into thinking it is performance RAM. But I think it would be a fine choice.

As said does not matter, save money! Kingston does not MFG RAM they assemble PCB's how they can be so great and the MFG can be so bad escapes me? The Kingston might have Hynix. "Value Select" is a real confidence builder. This is all chump! And kinda silly! Gotta buy brand name, oh so important, at the same time they tell you it is their cheap stuff, but oh so important? Turns out they don't even MFG the most important component? And likely MFG buy from the company that is criticized in this thread? I am not a Rocket scientist but I have common sense and can do the math. Buy the cheapest RAM. It is a no brainier I do not care what anyone else says unless talking specific issues. And if such I dare them to recommend "Value Select"? I mean come on! This is in the top ten for tired and incorrectly asked/answered questions!

Edit: Oh and welcome to NBR past my bedtime and trying to be honest, sorry.
