Hey guys I'm new here I just bought a dell vostro 1500
    specs as follows

    core 2 duo 1.66ghz
    256mb geforce 8600m gt
    2gb ram

I was wondering is it possible to install the brand new processor core 2 duo extreme for laptop on my vostro 1500

    is the 8600m gt 512mb or 256 I thought it was 512?

Where or when can I purchase a 8700m gt and how much will it cost and is it possible they'll get an even better DX10 card within a year? Can it handle it and is it possible?

I just spend 1200 CAD on my laptop and I'm broke I plan on saving up and spending another 1000-1500 upgrading it to core 2 extreme latest dx10 card
    and 4gb ram.

does the vostro have that turbo gear and santa rosa platfrom?

and for all you vostro owners are content with your purchase?

I do believe that the C2D Extreme chips will be mechanically compatible with the 1500's socket, but I'm not too sure about the heat issues, etc.

But either way the Extremem chips are really not worth the money you put into them; it's a relatively small performance boost for a relatively high cost. If you really want to upgrade the CPU, I'd go for a T7300 or a T7500 rather than an Extreme chip.

How long is it going to take to save? I would highly recommend selling your current computer and buying a new one in the future. The things you want will be comming out soon, maybe even more. So in a year or so you can start new with a warranty and no heat issues. Also you may not be able to get your hands on a 8700m GT that fits as it is not standard it would need to fit in the Vostro. Also you may be able to get PC6400 in the future if you buy a new system.

If you are trying to have the fastest best computer it is a very expensive game. Once you get there something new comes out. Good luck.

Isn't your HDD 5400? That is going to be the week link.

As mentioned, used the search button, or do you want your parents to spoon feed you that too?

You can't replace your 8600gt with anything until Dell releases a 8700gt for the 15" notebook.

Also, you need to relax. Lay off the crack and go outside for a change and take a deep breath. That will definitely help with the extreme rage teenage hormones you got going on.

You know what...end thread. Nothing useful has come out of it, and again the search function is your friend. But here's my take on the OP's problem...

I doubt anything smaller than a 17" will cool a Core 2 Extreme, so I'd guess no. Additionally, does Dell offer it as an option? If not (and they don't) then assume you cannot upgrade to it because either the processor needs too much power, too much cooling, or a different socket.

The 8600GT you have has 256MB of dedicated memory, but also borrows 256MB of RAM for a total of 512MB. Anything over the original 256MB is basically overkill, so it doesn't matter. This info is easily found by searching the forums.

You will never be able to install an 8700GT in a 15.4" notebook, again a fact found by searching. It requires too much cooling. Also, if you search the forum...you will find that while Dell notebooks are upgradeable, the upgrade options are very limited. In your case, your only upgrade options will consist strictly of what the 1500 is offered with over the course of its lifetime. The part will also have to be purchased direct from Dell (or a eBay Dell part) because Dell uses their own designs. It is not true MXM technology. Deal with it.

4GB RAM...see the RAM Deals thread. Some deals might be available where you live.

TubroCache does not matter. Search for this, and you'll see the performance benefits are marginal. This has been documented quite a few times on various sites, including our own.

Again, by searching you can discover the Vostro notebooks (and most currently offered) use the Santa Rosa platform. Again, searching will teach you that the 800MHz FSB processors are only found on Santa Rosa notebooks.

Anyway...learn to type www.google.com into your browser and you'll find quite a lot on your own. If you can't find it, then ask us.

But do not EVER cuss a fellow member out, tell someone to bug off, or otherwise insult another person. It is against the forum rules, and infractions WILL be handed out for it if the mod teams sees offensive posts. I guarantee you that people will be less inclined to help you if you're cussing out another member. Take this thread for example: on page one of this thread, you cuss someone out...and to date NO ONE has actually answered your question. Prime example of why being nice (not rude) can get you somewhere...not the other way around. So grow up.
