I noticed when choosing my upgrades for an Inspiron 1720, there was Sound Options. It states that the default is Integrated Stereo High Definition Audio. However, there is a simple $20 upgrade to Integrated Sound Blaster Audigy HD Software Edition. But as I say, just because it SOUNDS good (hmm..$20),
doesn't mean IT IS GOOD (even when that cheap). I was just wondering if anyone knew this upgrade is worth paying for over the default sound system? (be specific if possible). Despite being $20 pretty much...

EDIT: I guess the Sound Blaster Audigy HD is just software, but how does it improve anything? What does it do?

That 'upgrade' is just software. You still have the same integrated sound card, which will still sound the same.

I'd like to add a question. Is this upgrade required to get 5.1 sound through the hdmi port?

    Thanks.

it says its suppose to "enhance" the sound....but ive read from this forum that most users say it dosen't make a single difference to the sound.. so it's not worth it.

I'd get it because hey, for $20 you could go around saying "my laptop has a high defenition sound blaster" people would think you're a dj

Creative sound software is a waste.
It gives you absolutely no sound improvement.
All it gives you is a creative branding of the windows audio control center.
Basically its the exact same thing, only it says creative on it.

Software cannot make hardware, do not waste the $20.

This upgrade will not get you a 5.1 digital surround sound.
5.1 means that there are 5 speakers and a subwoofer.

The sound card in the dell 1720 cannot power a 5.1 digital surround sound system, you will need an audio amplifier and rectifier.

I agree with K-TRON. The software is a waste.

There are few aftermarket sound solutions for notebooks that provide a significant improvement over the onboard sound, and in most cases, it is not worth the money.
