    Hi all,
I have a dell inspiron 1000 laptop that is now a door stop. The hard drive went up on it and dell is telling me they have nothing to replace it with.
The original hard drive is a Hitachi Travelstar 40gb 4200rpm ata/ide drive. I was hoping not to have to buy new laptop. Can i replace this drive or are these types extinct?

You can definitely replace the drive, with a new ATA/IDE HDD. There are some good, cheap HDDs available from Samsung (HM160HC series).
Post the full model no. of the current HDD.

    ok, hdd model is :IC25N040ATMR04-0
Can this laptop take a HDD with that much capacity? I was looking at the SAMSUNG HM160HC but cdw stated they cannot be sure it will work properly. I realy don't want to waste $75.00 if it might not work.

    CDW doesn't have any return/refund policy ?

I cannot guarantee compatibility, but there is no reason why the HM160HC won't work in your notebook.

The Current HDD is ATA-6 compliant.
The probable SiS chipset in the Dell Inspiron 1000 is ATA-6 Compliant.
And the HM160HC is ATA-6 Compliant.

However, the BIOS could be have the max HDD size limited to a certain value (i.e. 60GB/100GB, etc)

My luck it will be set at 60. They have a return policy but they stated that if i install it and it is not compatable then they will not accept the return. Thats kinda standard for electronics i think.
    However,
Anything would be better than it is now, or was before. Thanks

i think your best bet is to buy

    h ttp://ww w.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817816002

    with a combo.

You get the external enclosure for free, the hard drive SHOULD work in your system but if it doesn't for whatever reason you now have an external pocket drive.

I personally haven't seen any Dells with BIOS limits for HDD space.

It should work fine without any problems

I upgraded from a 40gb 5400rpm Hitachi/IBM drive to the HM160HC from Samsung, and it runs perfectly in my system.

Here is my review of the drive:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=264209

As you can see my laptop has the 5400rpm version of the harddrive you have, so you should be able to upgrade as well.

If the drive does not get recognized for whatever reason, remove the drive from the computer, and partition it in another computer, and than install your operating system on the harddrive.
