I have a Seagate Momentus 5400.4 which is currently being used as an External Hard drive. The problem is, whenever I plug the external hard drive into my computer, its continuously makes a beeping sound and the disc in the drive itself does not seem to be spinning. I have tried on a different computer and with a different hard drive case but the problem persists. Also, when I plug it straight into my computer's internal SATA ports, it works fine. Power problem maybe? Please help! :(

possibly not getting enough power from the USB port. Have you tried an enclosure that uses 2 USB ports for connection (1 for data+power, other for power only, dual headed usb cable).

I think the SATA to USB adapter inside of your external hard drive is dead.
Reconnect the hard drive to your desktop and backup your files. If you did not damage the external enclosure, try putting it back together and asking seagate if they can replace the adapter inside.
It is quite common or the SATA to USB adapters to die after a while. This happened to me, and I had to replace my adapter.

I have tried on a different enclosure, but its the same problem. This is one of those custom made ones, without a Seagate enclosure.
