im looking at the new clevo M860TU thats coming out sometime during the summer. i noticed that it comes equipped with ddr3 ram sticks.

now i know ddr3 hardly barely shows any noticable improvement over high speed ddr2 sticks.
but is this one of those things were the same hardware gets better performance after drivers over time and such? (sort of like new drivers for videocards can push out better performance with more mature better drivers.)

DDR3 will just be in the new platform. (Montevina)

performance wise, there might not be any noticeable differences for day to day... but DDR3 does help to support higher clocks (for new processors).

I am pretty confident that all notebooks within a year or so will be DDR3... its just the new standard.

RAM doesn't have drivers. It works at a certain speed and will always work at that speed. Just like a processor.

DDR3 is more expensive than DDR2 right now though. So expect higher prices for a while.

DDR3 lower voltage less heat and as mentioned higher speed potential as 400–800 MHz I/O clock has potential 800Mhz to 1600Mhz vs DDR2 200–400 MHz I/O clock/400Mhz to 800Mhz. But remember just like DDR vs DDR2, latency hit. So if a mobile platform uses DDR2 at 800Mhz vs DDR3 at 800Mhz, DDR2 will be faster at least until (if) they can get the CL down on DDR3. I could not find DDR3 SODIMMs on NewEgg but looking at desktop CL is an issue.

Can you please stop reviving old posts about memory, it is better to make a new one with the information you have found.
