I got a HP dv5t laptop about a year and half ago and i paid something around $800 (with 1680x1050 screen, Nvidia GT 9600 video card). Recently my LCD display became unstable (flashing, flickering etc) sometimes. But in many cases by moving or pressing the screen i can make it work.

I sent it to two stores for checking, and was informed that the LCD panel was damaged and replacement was needed. Both of the places asked for about $180 for a screen replacement.

Do you guys think it is worth spending $180 on this old laptop? (I checked on laptopscreen.com and found that a new screen of this kind costs $109.99)
Or should I just get an big LCD monitor using the money, and then try to get a new and cheap laptop for traveling and so on?

Any advice would be much appreciated!!!

It sounds like a loose connector to me. Why not take it apart and make sure the display's connector is attached snugly to the motherboard.

I took it to two repair stores already and both of them told me the whole LCD needed to be replaced. One of them checked all the connectors....Seems that some part of the LCD circuit board has some problem but no one can fix those circuits...

Thanks for your response anyway. What do you think i should do other than checking the connectors again?

i had an hp that did the same thing. its the pcb board that is integrated into the lcd. its a pretty common problem. whats the part# on the back of the lcd? there super easy to switch out, no need to pay an extra $100 for some retard to install it for you.

If the laptop otherwise meets your needs, why junk it just because of a bad screen? If everything else is working fine, might as well keeping fixing it til it's really dead or is struggling to run the programs you've installed.

    Thanks for the input.

Yeah it should be the PCB board that has been damaged. Is it an HP thing? i've always been careful with my laptop, and I've never had trouble with my old thinkPad...

So are you saying that I go get a new screen myself? It would cost $110plus tax plus shipping, and i have to pay the repair store $35 for checking...Sounds like paying $180 is not that bad?

Still, paying so much to fix an old laptop sounds rediculuous to me....
