I just swapped my old CD-RW/DVD combo drive which was a TS-L462....for a ND-6650A....!! Does anyone know of any procedures that are supposed to be carried out before drive swapping....
Because when I insert the ND-6650A, at POST my HDD does not get detected..!!
If I enter it in windows the system gives a BSOD..!!

Any clues to what should I do..??

Which notebook and what was the firmware version of the TSL-462?

I suspect you might have two devices trying to be master on the IDE channel. Will the computer boot with the HDD disconnected? Most notebooks give separate IDE channels for the HDD and ODD (and the newer SATA HDDs don't need an IDE channel).

See this page for guidance on how to change the setting from master to slave.

Yes John, that is exactly the problem with the drive and laptop right now....!!
On the BIOS's General Page, its like this -

    1. IDE 1 ....(something) - the HDD
    2. ATAPI no. - TS-L462....

With both the HDD and the ND-6650A....nothing shows up in the 1st two rows..!!
But when I remove the HDD, the NEC ND-6650A shows up in IDE 1....!!
I went through that page before..!! but that software to change the bootcode needs to be done in windows....and the drive doesnt work in windows....!! As soon as I insert it, windows goes down with a BSOD..!!
My drive is the F/W 2.62 and had thought of installing the 2.62 original firmware....but I am a bit scared doing that though the drive does not have a warranty and is pretty old (July '05)....
Do you happen to know of any workaround for it, like kind of doing it AT POST or in DOS before logging into windows....!!
Or I buy the USB-IDE adapter and do the stuff using that....!!

Or I have got the SATA motherboard for my laptop, and I am waiting for the new HDD and CPU....would this drive work well in the SATA-variant of this motherboard....without needing to change the Boot-code..?? :)

There is a link to the NEC ND6650A Reverse ATA firmware package. You should be able to create a bootable DOS CD (visit www.bootdisk.com) and run the reverse firmware program by booting from the new ODD with the HDD disconnected. You will, of course, need another working optical drive in order to create the bootable CD. Or a USB floppy drive should be enough (I keep one the the drawer for occasions like this). Or maybe a bootable flashdrive, if the BIOS supports them.

If a notebook has an SATA HDD then the optical drive has all the IDE channel to itself and there is no risk of conflict. I'm sure it will work as slave even if there is no master.

I was able to make the bootable disc but on the site itself it was stated that the reverse..thing should be done by connecting the drive to a secondary IDE channel on a desktop via a slimline to ide adapter....!!
I ve ordered the adapter, just costed $5, so it kinda depends if the SATA HDD reaches me first or the adapter..!! :D

And Cheers for clearing out all me doubts John.... :notworthy:
