    Hello,

My Mat****a DVD-RAM UJ-850S isn't writing to either cd or dvds anymore. But I can still read cds and dvds just fine. Under device manager I'm not getting any errors. I've tried multiple types and brands of disks.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks.

I have that drive in my M1530. Similar problems. I think it's just a horrible drive, not sure if it can be fixed. Maybe try to swap it for another brand? :| Sorry if I didn't help lol.

You could try to give the optics a careful clean. I think the burners have different lasers for reading and writing do maybe one died.

I'm 99% sure this is a standard 12.7mm / 1/2" thick slim burner in which case any of the IDE burners here should work.

There's one thing to check: Look in Device Manager at the channels of the IDE ATA/ATAPI controller and see if there is only one device with current rate of UDMA-2 on one channel. That's the optical drive and if it has a channel to itself, no problems with master / slave settings. If it shares a channel then there are potential problems with a master / slave conflict (which is set in the ODD firmware).

Thanks John. That UDMA stuff checks out. Thanks for the link, I'll just have to get one and replace it.
