I recently bought an Acer Aspire 3004WLCi with a Philips SCB-5265 CDRW/DVD drive. My problem is the drive will only play CD's. Everytime I try to play a DVD it acts like there isnt a disc in the drive. I've set the region code to the correct setting and upgraded the firmware to x17. I'm really stumped on this one. Any help is appreciated.
Thanks

Check the DMA status and/or if you feel comfortable, delete the ide drivers. Windows will find and re-install them if needed.
-
DMA setting for the drive is set to "DMA if available" and Current Transfer Mode is Ultra DMA mode 2. I'm down with uninstalling the IDE drives with a little guidance.
-
It is in Device Manager.
-
I uninstalled the Drivers and it reinstalled the drive upon reboot and it still wont play DVD's. I did notice in the little little systray popups that it said "CD-ROM found" after the model number pop up. I don't know if that means anything or not.
-
What software are you using and exactly what happens when you try to play a DVD?
-
I'm using PowerDVD and Acer Arcade. When I put a DVD in the drive it spins up and doesnt recognize a disc in there. When I try to play the disc manually from the software it says there isn't a disc in the drive.
-
Did you try to put another DVD disc or another movie for testing??
How about running regular CDs?? If the problem is still there, probably, the DVD drive is defective!! -
I did try another DVD, and it plays regular CD's just fine. Its sounding more and more like the DVD laser is out.

I've been shopping around and came across these optical drives http://www.abs.com/diy/Config.asp?Section=200300&CategoryCode=20030006&layout=CB
could I replace my burnt out drive with one of those as long as it is IDE/ATAPI interface? -
Yes, you can replace it. Here are couple of them.

Interesting I had looked on Newegg for a new drive (I bought the notebook there) and seemed to have overlooked them. I think I'll upgrade to a DVD burner. Thanks for the help.
-
Youre welcome. I just bought a dvd burner for my laptop as well. Though there was nothing wrong with my current drive, cdrw/dvd combo drive. I bought the NEC-6750A. Anyway, hope you get better luck reading your dvds.
JC -
Have you installed it yet? I was going to go with either the NEC 6750 or the NEC 6650.
-
Oh...I just bought it on last Friday, so it should be coming tomorrow. I cant wait. Hehe

Sweetness. Do you know a site that I could use for reference to remove the drive? I'm not entirely sure how to remove the keyboard and I dont want to go poking around blindly with a screwdriver.
-
I am not sure about the Acer notebooks. But on Dell's notebooks, I dont need to remove the keyboard or taking the system apart. On my Dell 1150, here is showed how to do it.

I got it and installed. However, I broke one of middle tab durring the change of the faceplate. Oh well. I only upgrading the drive only once. Now I got to test it. I probably will be done at early this evening or eariler.

Thats too bad. Let me know how it burns.
Found the instructions for removing the drive too. Heres the link for other Acer users.

Yeah, but the old faceplate from the old drive fits perfect and secure to the new drive.
Its burns just great. I am VERY happy with it. Too bad I dont have any dual layers dvds so I can test them out also, but I dont need them in the moment
Now excuse me, I have to remove this stubborn bracket from the old drive so the new drive can secure well in the bay (see the attachment what I meant about the bracket).

Ah I see. I'm glad the drive works good. Looks like thats the one I'll get from newegg.
