    Hi,
First post here but i once in a while read some posts in the forum.
I bought my notebook, a Pavilion DV9640us about 2 years ago and i'm considering upgrading the cpu but i can't find much information about this notebook anywhere in the internet.
I did some research and found some information that it's chipset(pm965) only supports 667mhz, while some other people say it supports 800mhz fsb. What is the truth about it? the bios version is the one that came with it, never upgraded. If the chipset really supports 800mhz, to wich processor can i upgrade, maybe a t7800? It comes with a [email protected] and 667mhz fsb.
Thanks a lot in advance, and sorry if i missed any information that could help more.

It supports 800mhz fsb cpu's. I have actually worked on that exact same model on top of that. I replaced the t5250 with a t8100 it worked perfect and helped alot with the hddvd player the laptop comes with.

    Tippey,
Thanks for answering. Did you have to upgrade the bios or it worked right out of the box? another question i have is if it is needed to change the heatsink and cooler, if sowhere i can find a good one?
    Thanks a lot.

There is only 1 heatsink that will fit and thats the one you have made by hp. I would replace all thermal paste on the CPU and GPU. On the graphics card portion of the heatsink HP used a little peice of foil and some clay like stuff between it and the heatsink it self. I took a razor blade and removed the peice of foil and the clay stuff and put on real thermal paste. I also did a copper heatsink mod to the chipset. In my brothers laptop which has a temperature sensor in the chipset i dropped its temperature 20*C so i reccomend doing this. Your laptop with all of this done should run 10-20*C cooler. These were my results on 3 diffrent laptops. As far as the bios goes you should download the new one right here you need it because there are some older versions that dont support 45nm cpu's. Look here

Off topic but what cpu do you plan on getting?

First I was thinking about buying the t7800, but when you said that it supports the t8100 model I thought about the t8300 wich is 2.4ghz and supports sse 4.1 and it's much cheaper than the t7800.
thanks for the links, i was trying to find it too :)

I would reccomend the t8300. I used to have one it was pretty powerfull. The t8300 was in my dv6500t which uses a near identical motherboard to your dv9000. The t7800 is built on older processer which uses 65nm transistors the t8300 uses 45nm. Basically it does the same thing but its smaller so it needs less energy and produces less heat. Now the problem i see ( which no one on this fourm will admit ) Is that since they run cooler and use less power they put more on the chip. Basically in my opinion is cancles out that effect sort of. Its not going to run any cooler then the t7800 because since it ran cooler they knew they had room to make it faster without making it too hot. In other words what im trying to say is the bump up to 45nm only reduces heat and power if the 2 chips are running at the same speed.

I just bought the t8300 and i'm waiting for it to arrive. Bought Arctic silver ceramique too to aplly in it. Can you answer me one more question about the dv9640us? I'm wondering if it''s GPU can be upgrade too.
Thanks a lot for the help you've been giving me.

Tippey's banned; he won't be giving any more help in this thread. :p

According to specs and reviews, the 8600m graphics in that model are non-replaceable.
