I was looking to upgrade one of my friends computers and have noticed that DDR2 667 laptop ram has gone up double in price what it was last year. Does anyone know how long this has been like that? Is this just a temp thing because it is around the holidays and companies figure people will not know and buy ram for twice as much as it is worth or are the chips in short supply or something?

I am just confused why this is happening and when it started. I know ram was about $50 for 4GB this summer and I am not sure what has happened since then.

It's been like that for a few months and it's going to continue to be like that as DDR2 production winds down and DDR3 production increases.

I know that ddr3 is becoming the standard but I didn't think it would push ddr2 prices like that. I would think that there is still enough ram out there to keep the price down.

I am really hoping that sellers aren't going,"well demand has gone up to upgrade older computers so lets bump the price"

Personally I know that Newegg has been bumping prices as things become more popular (ATI cards) and I hope this is not another thing to add to the list of MSRP + prices because of demand.

Do you honestly think that DDR2 is becoming MORE popular because of upgrades?

The amount of RAM sold for upgrades if far less than the amount used by manufacturers for new computers.

It's also been mentioned that there was actually a glut of RAM modules on the market last year, and thus a lot of manufacturers were cutting prices to the bone to move out inventory. Now that the supply has gone down (and the economy has gone south), companies can't afford to sell at cost anymore.

I am not saying that DDR2 is becoming more popular then DDR3 because of computer upgrades. I know a ton of people are asking me how to speed up their computer and RAM is the simple answer. It was only a thought that users could be going to there local computer guy to ask how to speed things up more after installing 7.
