I have a brand new m1530. 2 gigs of ram, 2.2g processor, SSD, blah blah.

So fans are clean, everything is brand new. My core temps were sitting at around 75 degrees celcius and the only load was surfing the internet. This seemed a bit high, so I talked online with a rep who had me update the bios. Immediately CoreTemp reported a drop in temp to 40 degrees celcius. I was happy with this. Now it's a week later and the temps are sitting at 75 degrees celcius and I'm only surfing the internet. This time, a different rep said it's probably CoreTemp reporting incorrectly, however if I were to put the laptop on my lap, it would be too hot. Is 75 degrees too hot? Or is this normal?

    Thanks

Way to hot for what you say you are doing. Are fans coming on?

Im currently writing a word doc, and my core #0 is 72 and my core #1 is 68 degrees celcius. And no fans are on. Im using cortemp. Is there another prog I could use to double check CoreTemp's reporting?

I use Note Book Hardware Control. At those temps I would want fan on. Sometimes you can't hear them. Put your hand by exhaust vent can you feel air flow? There is an application that can override the sensor for fan control and among other things allow you to have them always on. Something is not right.

Im showing these temps with hwmonitor, all in degrees C:

    THM_ 53
    Core0 72
    Core1 69
    GPU Core 80

I mean, my concern is like yours, that for what I am doing, the fan's should not need to come on, at least I would think. So something sounds fishy. Now, at these temps, I'd expect the fan to be on, but I can look at it and see it's not on. I like this laptop (though it was a big tossup between this and the NOX). I hope I don't have to send it back. :( I can deal with it if it's normal, but if I'm going to pay $2k for anything, I want my money's worth and something that is working how it should.

    i would suggest returning it.

we might get a "fix" for it, but for all we know its temporary. dont risk it.

Something is wrong, that 40 temp is more proper than 70. Your fans or sensor are bad. Unless something running in the background, but that should trigger fans. Return.

Is this the new BIOS patch for the nVidia GPU thermal cycling problem?

Perhaps part of the new thermal management strategy is to stop everything cooling down very much as well as stopping to getting too hot?

Im not sure which BIOS patch the dell rep had me run but it fixed it for a week. I just chatted with a rep and I'm now going through a full diagnostic test on the system and then will talk to him again with what the tests say.

Wish there was a review of the NOX somewhere online. I was really tempted to get that instead of the m1530. Though I must say that everything else I like so far about the Dell. But if problems persist, im not against to a refund and getting a different laptop. We'll see how this works out.

Now, I just finished the diagnostic (though I dont know where there results are written) and my core 0 is at 42 degrees and core 1 is at 38 degrees. The question is why was it at 75 degrees before and now at 40? And what should I do if it sometimes goes back to 75 degrees or higher?

Edit: It is rising though.. its now at 50 and 47.

ps, thanks for everyone's help/comments. I read this board a lot. It's the best by far.

So now, sitting idle, the temp will get to 60 degrees celcius, and then the fan comes on and lowers the temp to 42 degrees. Then the fan goes off, the temp rises again to 60 degrees, fan comes back on, and process starts again. This normal? This is better than before where the fan wasnt coming on, but still this normal?

Hey, I found this link here actually with the exact same problem as many others. Just wanted to get advice as to whether this is enough to return a laptop or just deal with it? Or wait for them to find a fix.. is this a bios problem or what do you think?
