I was reading the 64bit vs Core Duo thread and someone wrote that:

"However, a laptop with an Intel Core Duo processor will support the new 64-bit dual core Intel processor, meaning you can someday take out your existing Core Duo and replace it with a 64-bit dual core Intel processor".

I am looking at the Dell Inspirion 9400 Core Duo T2300 1.6 Ghz and was wondering is the above quote bogus or could I change the CPU for a 64bit chip when/or if needed? Any links to support it or defy it?

Search the Forums... Some people put Meroms in their 9400's as long as a month or two ago. They have the same FSB speed and yes they absolutely are upgradable. Dell didnt even cahnge their mobos for Core 2. Im planning on upgrading mine to core 2 after santa rosa comes out...

Yes, you could. As long as you have an Intel 945 or better chipset, then it will support both the Core Duo and Core 2 Duo (which is 64bit).

And to add on to what's above, the Santa Rosa will use a completely different socket, so it will only ship with Core 2 Duo.

santa rosa is not compatible with merom... sorry... and core 2 duo merom is completely compatible with core duo yonah, some may or may not need a bios update/flash. if you have a core duo 1.6 and you are looking for a serious power boost and have 300 ish lying around you can easily put in a core 2 duo merom t7200 (cheapest of the 2nd tier of core 2 duo's) with 4mb cache and 2.00ghz of raw processing power!!! imho its worth it... im gonna get it put directly into mine as soon as it comes out retail..

What the heck are you talking about? Santa Rosa is MADE for Merom. It's Yonah that it's not compatible with. There will be two different versions of Merom chips available, the ones that work with the current chipset, and the ones that will work with Santa Rosa. The current ones come in a 667MHz FSB, 479pin socket M, the new ones will be an 800MHz+, socket P with Santa Rosa. Current Meroms will NOT work in the new Santa Rosa chipset, but Merom itself most certainly will.

derelict1987, you most likey will not be able to upgrade to santa rosa when you have a C1D

santa rosa requires socket P which is not in laptop mobos right now

sorry to burst your bubble, but you can only upgrade to the current C2D
