I recently got a compaq pres. sr1703wm with amd sempron cpu and some stick of 184pin ddr sdram from a guy whos said it boots up and needs the password on the login screen reset. Thats no problem for me but he has a 939 cpu socket which on inspection was found to have several bent prongs. I tried to straighten them the best i could but in the end it was impossible and a pin broke off. So I cant see how it worked I had it close one time and it fit into the socket but the computer did not display a boot screen and a orange light stayed on. Can you still get a boot screen without a processor ?? My thoughts point to getting a new processor and memory but I dont know if the memory it has is still good. In my opinion I like working on laptops much better I find it easier because desktops seem so touchy, I cant figure out why a display wont come up or if my memory is bad.

No PC will POST without both a CPU and RAM. You can get lucky and destroy CPU pins that are either unused or not strictly necessary. Usually if you break a pin the computer won't POST and you need to replace the CPU or somehow repair it (not too easy). Since this is a desktop question, I have to close the thread due to forum policy. Please visit our sister site DTR.
