Long story short, my current laptop is dead. I don't want to spend a lot of $$$ on a new one until I head overseas in September 2010. So I'm thinking about picking up a cheap replacement laptop for taking to class, writing essays, web surfing, watching videos, listening to music, some photoshoping, and that's about it.

I can get the Compaq Presario CQ60-410US for $350 which I figure is better than a Netbook for the same price. The hardware specs for it can be seen HERE. However it doesn't say too much about the motherboard.

If I get this laptop I'll upgrade the HD and Memory, as well as I would like to upgrade the Celeron it comes with for the Intel Core 2 Duo T7200 (take parts from the dead laptop in my signature). My question is, can this cpu swap be done?

*** Not sure is this should be here or in the Compaq section ***

I found some additional information on the two different cpu's as well, if that helps anyone answer my question.

Intel Celeron 900 (comes with Comapaq CQ60)

Intel Core 2 Duo T7200 (from old laptop)

From what I understand the Celeron 900 has a P socket and its sockets supported are PGA478.

While the C2D T7200 has a M socket and its sockets supported are PBGA479, PPGA478.

Therefore the answer is NO, these cpu's are not interchangable due to Socket P vs Socket M.

However I could be completely wrong and would really appreciate someone verifying this for me please and thank you!

You can sell your T7200 for $100 and buy a socket P CPU (like my T8100) ;)

EDIT: what exactly is wrong with your current notebook?

Oh! Sorry, I thought you were looking for CPU's originally. hehe

Maybe you just need to reflow your solder for the video card to work?

Yeah I've had someone on the forum suggest baking my mobo. I might try that over my Xmas break. However it's one of those things that at the end of the day I a) don't feel too comfortable doing and b) find it more hassle than it's worth for 3+yr laptop. I'd sooner spend the $300 for a quick replacement until September 2010. But, thank you for the suggestion, I appreciate it.
