    Can I replace CPU's

    I have 2 Acer travelmate 8000 laptops 1 2 ghz one (with a fried M/B) and one that is 1.7 Ghz is it possible to swap the 2 gig one into the 1.7 gig one
    without to much hassle

    Yes it is possible. The CPUs are socketed in your notebooks as shown in the image below.

    it is very very difficult to change CPU. and i meant REALLY VERY hard work. you need to dissamble pretty much the entire notebook. the CPU might also be soldered in on some notebook.

    actually, it's not hard at all to change the CPU on newer notebooks. on mine, for example. i would just have to unscrew the backplate, remove the heatsink, swap the CPUs, and replace the heatsink and backplate. shouldn't take more than 10min.

    no its not? totally depends on the notebook, I can swap mine in about 5 minutes.

    dont you guys need to re-apply thermal paste? or even before that; clean the thermal paste.

    Well its not difficult if your tech-savvy and wouldn't mind experimenting opening the laptop and yes you will need to clean the old paste off and replace it with some fresh stuff.

    Sure, but that's not a difficult task. Swapping CPU in my VAIO for example takes about 30mins because i have to remove the whole cover before i can reach my CPU, but it's just alot of screws to remove, not hard to do in any way. Just make sure you unlock the CPU with a flat screwdriver or so before you try to remove it, so you won't try to remove it while it's locked in the socket :p
