Dont worry guys my house isnt burning down I have a quick question to ask..

I want to upgrade my MSI GT70 20C/20DGPU from a 770m to 970m, my plan is simple Sell my GPU add some cash and and buy the new 970m GPU.

Which bring me to my question. Will my laptop still work with just the intel core i7 alone? I dont want to be left with out a laptop when I take out my 770m and wait for the shipping of my 970m. Has any one here removed there 7xx,8xx series gpu and used just the CPU to boot up.. and use the laptop for just the basic stuff.

    my current bios is E17631MS.507
I know before I remove my 770m I need to update my bios to 50V first before 518V then the 970m will be plug and play basically and should work fine

Assuming you have the Haswell i7 QC which includes the Intel® HD Graphics 4600 igpu, you should be fine.

Whether or not the new gpu will work though is another question (with or without a new BIOS).

    Good luck.

Unless MSI feels it had to reinvent the wheel with regards to the igpu; it should. :)

It is theoretically possible. When you install only Intel's GPU driver the system works absolutely fine, even if you don't install NVIDIA or AMD GPUs' drivers because of switchable GPU technology. I don't think things will be different when you actually remove the hardware.

Take the 770M out of the laptop and see if it works without it. You can always put the GPU back in.

Just make sure you have thermal paste at hand if you plan on putting it back in :D
