First of all, forgive my ignorance. I'm not computer savvy at all. Recently, after trying to install a game for my son, my CD-ROM quit working. I've tried everything from music cds, to movies, to school discs. When I look under the system information under components- CD-ROM, nothing is listed. If anyone can help me or walk me through a re-installation that would be great. I work full time and in school and I have to have this computer working, but unfortunately, I don't have the money to take it in for repair.

    Thank you!!

That sounds like either your DVD drive got disconnected internally, or your drive's gone bad.

What exact laptop do you have?

Thats a bummer, the laptop you have makes a difference as to help you out. Replacing a dvd drive is actually one of the easiest that you could possibly do. From my experience with laptops most have one screw to undo then you can just slide it out and put in a new one.
Search for a manual on your laptop make and model and you can find instructions on how to do that swap.

You can try to take it out then put it back in and the computer may recognize and reinstall it. Your computer should just recognize hardware like that and install it on its own its not like a game where you run an installer.
