Swapping out graphics cards in laptops is something that cannot be done on most laptops. Therefore, you will find very few and highly priced mobile GPU's that will only work with a very small number of specific laptop models.

alienware m15x and m17x can accept mxm 3.0b graphics cards and are upgradeable. I dont know which other laptops can be upgraded.

Probably the best part to buy first is the service manual. That may list for example a Blu Ray drive that fits and was supplied as a top end build, larger capacity memory modules and processors that have been verified to work etc. saves a lot of wasted cash

I've just recently found this site: Octopart - Electronic Parts, Electronic Components, Datasheets

It's sort of like a site that gathers info from multiple component providers and you can search from a single place.

I did a search for Nvidia and some stuff showed up. I know some of those are boards with the chips on them (stuff you get from BestBuy, NewEgg), I don't know enough about chip naming conventions to know when the item description is for a single chip.
