WD Scorpio Black is the fastest. Seagate Momentus XT should perform just as fast or faster but is only available at 500GB.

Only one option right now: WD Scorpio Black 750GB.

Faster than a 500GB Seagate XT Hybrid (not in 'snap', but rather real throughput/productivity).

(Yeah, I know there are others available - but WD drives will continue to work... can't say the same for the Seagate 7200.4's...).

I'm planning to get a WD SCorpio Black 750GB adding to the existing WD SCorpio Black 500GB. Should I clone my OS HDD to the 750GB hdd? Will there be an improvement in speed?

myth1001, I would - the ranking for 'speed' in my use is:

    Scorpio Black 500GB,
    Hitachi 7K500 500GB,
    Seagate XT Hybrid 500GB,
    Scorpio Black 750GB.

Chip.de measures the noise hard drives make. Scorpio Black are among the loudest hard drives available: Vergleich: Notebook-Festplatten im Test - CHIP Online

    (Lautheit means loudness, 100 is best/lowest, 0 is worst/loudest)

Scorpio Blue WD7500BPVT is a good choice if you want silence.

No, sorry - the 'better/faster' drive is listed below the slower drive (above)...

I guess it depends on your definition of "best".

Fastest throughput - WD Scorpio Black
Fastest "snap" performance - Seagate Momentus XT (windows boot, opening browser most probably, the apps you use most will have a "snap" feel when launching)
Quietest - 5400RPM, probably Scorpio Blue would be a good choice

I tend to gravitate towards Western Digital hard drives for my computing needs. I've owned several "Black" series drives in the past and couldn't be happier with them. If it were me, definitely take a look at the Black series from Western Digital if you are concerned about high capacity performance. However, if you value medium performance, the Blue series is a great choice as well since it will save on your notebook's battery life and operate at a reduced noise level.

What is louder, the 750gb Momentus 7200.5 or the 750gb Scorpio Black? I want something fast and quiet, I know it is a hard-to-reach sweet spot!

In my experience the Seagate is a little bit quieter. The WD is lot faster though.

It depends on your notebook, your hearing and tolerance for noise whether the noise of the Black is really bothersome.

I just dropped the WD Scorpio Black w/ 7200rpm into my desktop. Best decision I've made in a while :)
