    I'm pretty sure just throwing it in the trash is not the best option...

    I know there are electronic recycling places around but I'm not sure where the best place to look for them is. Also I'd prefer that it'd be free of charge

    Your location isn't indicated in your Profile? In the US you can take most any electronic product (i.e. Monitor, Printer, TV, Scanner, PC, etc.) to a Best Buy store and drop it off. They will get rid of it for free.

    Give it to some electronics workshop nearby. You'd be amazed how many things these guys can salvage and recycle for other (electronics) needs.
