I am looking to upgrade the rams on my coming Sony SZ18...

I am just wondering does it matter which brand of ram I get? I am not looking to spend too much $$ on this so I am think about getting a pair of these:

    CORSAIR ValueSelect 512MB 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) Notebook Memory Model VS512SDS667D2 - Retail

Does anyone know if these rams are good? They are on sale at www.newegg.com. Anyone knows if newegg ships to Canada? Thank you.

Umm.... not necessary. I guess all the main brands can be considered as good brand for rams. It is all about personal choice.

People will have their own biases. Mine is towards Kingston. I have added one of their sticks to my slower factory stick and it still runs flawlessly.

I'm bias to Kingston here. Great stuff.

But you'd probably be find with Corsair, they're RAM is pretty good. It'll serve you well.

[ Transcend is probably my favorite brand. ]

OCZ is what I use, their RAM is the best IMO. Sometimes it can be pricey, but if you snag it at the right time you can get a great product + great price.

Corsair would be my second choice, I have 2GB of XMS DDR400 in my desktop. That's quality stuff.

    Thanks...but I got 2 more questions:

    1) Do I need matching rams for core dual?

    2) I am getting a Sony SZ, is it a easy few step process of opening a slot at the bottom of the laptop and popping in the RAMs, or do I have to take apart the entire laptop (bottom, keyboard, etc) to reach the RAMs? Usually when I take apart these things...they end up staying apart :(

Think of it this way, a lot of ram manufacturers use Samsung ram chips in their modules, sooooooo, Samsung it is baby. :D

I use OCZ in my desktop and have Apacer in my laptop.

Apacer is a great alternative for laptops in ddr2 flavour. It was compared to some corsair and kingston value ram and holy **** it surpassed the corsair and kingston in a lot of tests.

    It's really cheap too.

Hynix ram is Korean too, just like the Samsung chips, :D

    Cheers,
    Mike

great brands are corsair, kingston, geil, crucial, buffalo, OCZ, kingmax, PNY, and transcend. I've had positive expiriences with all these brands.

I also recommend buying from newegg.com.

Some laptops have all ram slots under a cover on the bottom and some laptops have one under the cover and one under the keyboard. You'll have to see when you get it.

I think Kingston technology And Crucial Are reputable and reliable brands I am a fan of Kington though. It's also very easy to find exactly what kind of RAM you need on their website. I find the manafacturer and model search on their website very useful to find what RAM I need. I'm thinking of buying RAM form them.

On laptops, I like Kingston the best for stability and performance - i just never have a problem using Kingston in any system.

i use hyperx on my desktop, too, so maybe i'm just a Kingston ho.
