I recently bought and installed an e8335 in my gateway FX6860, the chip fits and it's PM45 chipset and socket P and all that joy, however when I actually turn the computer on it seems to start to load, immediately shuts off, and then turns itself back on and runs steadily under a black screen never loading the BIOS. I think I have to fix that seeing as I would like to use the computer and it's my only one; I have the old processor ( a T5550 ) handy and it is a quick switch so I'm not up a creek but I would like to know if anyone has any ideas on how to fix this particular problem.

I don't know if it's the BIOS or the chip itself.

Edit: I think it is the BIOS so now my only question is how does one find the BIOS necessary to get the computer up and running? It's a Phoenix board.

The FX6860 uses PM965 chipset with a max FSB 800 MHz. The E8335 has a FSB of 1066 MHz. Also it fits physically, it is not compatible. Look for a processor for PM965 chipset with a FSB of 667 or 800 MHz. The T5550 has a FSB 667 MHz. The BIOS must also support the new processor.

So the highest clock speed I can get on this board is 2.6?

Should I just buy a new Lappy?

I believe your best option for the CPU is a T9500 at 2.6 GHz.
New notebook? It depends on your usage. Consider maxing out the RAM and buying a SSD, upgrade the OS if you don't run Windows 7.
For browsing and office applications you don't need a faster CPU. Just my opinion.
