I am using an external monitor with my acer TM8204. When the external monitor is connected, i can set it as primary through the ATI control center.

What I would like is for the external monitor to be automatically set as primary when it is connected, and for everything to be reset (applications moved over, taskbar moved, etc) when the external is disconnected.

    To summarize:

External connected: external is primary monitor with start menu, task bar, etc.

External disconnected: laptop is primary, all windows moved over, etc

Can this be done automatically? I am using ultramon as well, but am not too familiar with it.

In XP, Vista might work similar. Right click on "Desk Top" screen, then click properties. In "Display Properties" click "settings" tab. That is where you set up primary monitor. I believe if you set the external as primary. I think when it is plugged in it will function how you want, when not the internal will be used by default. I think that is what you're asking?

vista with nivida controls manages it pretty decently. mine automatically makes the external monitor the primary and turns the laptop screen to the extended display. and when unplug it, the laptop becomes the main one. and it all goes back to normal again when i plug it into the display!
