    hi

i currentley own an Asus X71SR. i'd like to upgrade the CPU but cannot find much info on what size CPU i can install. i've used Winflash to upgrade the bios to version 206. I 've noticed on the Asus website that the X71SL has a bios upgrade to accomodate CPU's up to Intel Core Duo P8700. Would this be suitable to use ? Any help much apprciated.

I did a little searching and it looks like the Asus X71SR can take Core 2 Duos only ... that said it can take the last-gen models of that series that were produced. The fastest one is the Core 2 Duo T9900 though that's likely to be expensive; take a look at the T9600, T9800 or for slightly lower power consumption and heat output, the P8700/P8800/P9600.

Now, whether the X71SR supports those specific models is up in the air. I'm of the camp that says your best bet is to upgrade to a CPU that the notebook was originally offered with (or any CPU that someone upgraded to and got working). Basically I need evidence that it works, not just "the tech specs say this, so theoretically ...". You get the point.

What CPU does the laptop have currently?

thanks for taking the time to reply. my laptop currently has a 5750 installed. A colleague at work offered my a 8400 to try with the option to buy if it worked. however when fitted the laptop with the new CPU failed to boot.
