Thinking about upgrading my laptops HDD, I'll probably end up doing it around June/July, are there any larger capacity drives coming?

Space is my first priority, so 5400rpm is fine, just wondering if there will be 640gb or larger drives in the near future for 2.5 inch sata.

I havent heard any specific announcements, but would expect 750GB 2.5" drives in Q4. And a 1TB drive in Q2/3 2010.

Samsung and Hitachi 500GB drives were announced over a year ago, and WD about six months ago. So the natural progression would be to expect bigger drives in the not too distant future.

Bigger drives will come, however I think 750gb would be the next step rather than 640.
500Gb is plenty of storage for a laptop, have you ever thought of compressing files, videos etc with Divx, or buying an external 1Tb harddrive?

I was thinking about getting an external drive, but its just not as portable as an internal one. I also dual boot with linux, and have recently bought a usb tv tuner which seems to be filling my current 160gb drive at an alarming rate.

I don't really keep track of how much gets used, and I'll open up My Computer and see I have next to no room left and spend an hour or two cleaning up. Figured with a larger hard drive this would happen less often.

Honestly, I know external drives are a pain in the butt. However, if you spend 1-2 hours cleaning up your internal then you should just but a 1.5TB external to save you any more hassle.

you could pick up the WD 500gb 5400rpm for under a $100 now but considering your filling it that fast with just TV shows i would get a (and/or) a big external then you can take your video collection everywhere without having to lug you whole notbook around also i wouldn't think it would cut down too much on your portability if you have a descent bag...

I'm sure there will be bigger drives, but they are probably months away as I havn't heard any annoncements for either laptops or desktops. Generally we see a jump in the desktop market, then laptop. As such the lack of desktop improvment makes a laptop improvement unlikely in my mind.

Can your laptop swap the optical drive for a second harddrive? That would give you 1TB if you bought a caddy and two 500GB drives.

I wasn't so much looking for terabytes of storage, I just wanted to make sure that if I bought a 500gb hdd it wouldn't be replaced by a substantially larger one in the next month.

And as much as I would love to get a SSD, I'm on a tightish budget.

Judging from the pace of HDD development I would have to say that it would probably even exceed your expectations, I'm sure that type of hard drive capacity is sooner to be expected...
