Another question from my Best Buy visit today. While looking at the Toshiba I liked the sales person said it was extremely important to get their servcie plan because the battery could cost as much as $500.00 to replace when it is worn out. Has anyone had to pay this kind of money for a battery replacement on a Toshiba Satellite series?

Well, on my dell, I could get a 9 cell battery for 69.99$ on Ebay so I don't really think it is the case.

Seems like a salesman ou want to sell a warranty for their own benefit.

But For the toshiba satellite series, I don't really know but 500$ is a lot of money!

$100 is more likely for a battery ($200 for batteries for Sony notebooks). Have a look at the prices for Toshiba batteries. However, batteries normally have a warranty of no more than 1 year (possibly less) and, unless the service plan specifically says otherwise, you will have to pay for replacing the battery if it dies in month 13.

A motherboard might cost $500 to replace.

or you could just buy the lithium ion batteries for $10 and solder them into the battery case yourself....

$500 for a battery. Well that is not true at all.
The most expensive batteries are buying through Dell, sometimes they charge up to $200-250 for a battery, when you can buy the same one from a battery warehouse for like $80.
Usually batteries cost between $60 and $120.
This is what you should do.
Go back to best buy and take the battery out of the laptop.
Look for the model number of the battery and write it down.
Then go home, and go to google shopping and search "model number, battery" and you should get the exact same battery in the google shopping search. Then from their you can see how much the battery does cost,
    I guarantee its not $500.

Depending on the brand, ~$200 is max I've seen.

The person was trying to make commission or quotas or whatever they have.

Reminds me of the girl who straight up lied to me saying if a video game I was buying was scratched up when I got home I wouldn't be able to exchange it without warranty.

The guy just took the sales pitch to the extreme. It's supposed to be:

"I'd recommend a one of these service plans for your laptop. We actually have two different tiers of service plans, the basic one - which covers most hardware failures, heat, dust, and humidity damage. There's also the accidental ones - which goes above and beyond to cover drops, spills, and almost everything imaginable. The 3 year accidental plan for your laptop is $xxx.xx, which I believe is the best choice for you since you said that you travel a lot, and also work around children. Also, keep in mind that these plans cover one battery replacement within their duration. The average lifetime of a lithium-ion battery is about 2 years due to their very nature, and they can cost upwards of $160".

You'd get half the people to bite.

When I picked up my Gateway 6860 a few days ago, this is the exact speech I was given. I mean, I'm pretty confident that it was word for word, what she said to me. The only difference was the situational piece about travel and kids. She saw that I had my kids with me, and did throw that in there. As far as a generic speech though, it's the same lol. Kinda weird. I opted not to get it at this time. We'll see before my 14 days are up. I already have a single dead pixel in the middle of the screen, so the laptop might be going back.

I would have been far happier with my speech, except for things mentioned which made it hard to believe (like $500.00 batteries), and if the super terrrific extended plan would have been less than $300.00.
