Has anyone been keeping an eye on 39xxXM chips prices? I just thought about looking on ebay for prices on them since i figured they have been dropping and it appears they are in the 300-400 range now. I was curious on how long that has been that way. My17x can't handle much more than 3.8GHz consistent so i haven't bothered really looking into getting one since i would only use it to boost my single thread speeds....I always need better single thread speed -_-

If anyone sees a good deal or has info on the market about it let me know. I am curious. I wonder if it is now worth while to nab one.

Well, it is expected, like with all electronics.

When next gen Intel CPU comes out soon, the 39xxXM will be already 2 generations behind.

The biggest thing that stimulates the market is the demand, at least this is what i think.

price is dropping because people are going more for a newer tech, expect some fluctuations just before/after Intel releases next gen chips

yea there still seems to be a healthy market and supply. Bidding on one right now. Maybe i'll luck out and get it 60-100 bucks cheaper than the going rate

    Yep, good luck !

Any XM CPU performance wise should be good enough for 3-4 years +

if you can cool it ^^ m17x R4 sucks compared to an M18x :/ I really only need it for single thread so i should be able to get away with 4.2-4.5GHz If i can't score a great deal it isn't a big deal for me to wait so maybe i'll get lucky

Since IB doesn't offer much less than Haswell, i can see the price being a bit higher than expected. According to Mr. Fox's Alienware testing the 3940XM beats the 4930MX when overclocked anyways.

    My 2 cents.

this makes me all the more happy i picked IB/7970m for my upgrade :) if i only picked an m17x R2 for my first gaming laptop and not a G51j lol. What happens when you first start to learn about computers and prices in hard core detail ^^ Don't get me wrong the G51j was a good deal...just not a long term laptop like clevo and alienware :p

See, the issue i have is that i could buy an XM chip for my laptop, or for about the same price i could get two 780ti's in SLI...

give it a year or two and it'll be down to 300-400 bucks I am just glad i was able to get the 3720qm for like 9 extra bucks :p Haven't use VM yet. Still need to learn how to use those alone with TOR and VPNs :/

You mean 780s in SLI? A 780Ti SLI is still much more than an XM chip, at least in the US.

You should be able to grab a new one for about $400 from Shirley's or other vendors. I've also seen some used ones go for about $300-$350.

seeing upgrademonkey at 460+ only one seller on ebay was 410 when i checked today

is getting 4.5GHz hard on yours? What is the TDP when just using 25% (single thread) Prime single I won't be able to handle full load but i am looking at it for single threaded stuff like games/opera

Getting 4.5 is pretty easy and probably on the limit under benchmark conditions with standard cooling and IC7 paste. One core can easily do more, I'm not sure of the TDP on a single core though. Try Shirley's and see if you can make them an offer. I recently got a new one for $400 from them.

do you mind running ThrottleStop and see what prime 1 thread does for TDP?

Sure, here you go. Bench done at 4.5Ghz on 1 core. Temps were very low too.

if your using TS bench you need to run 2 thread....TS bench is weird. It doesn't actually use a full core for single thread. prime 1 thread does use 1 full core. Long story...me and a few other people hashed things out because TS bench acts very different from other benchmarks

Oops my mistake.. no that makes perfect sense. 2 threads to make up 1 core. Here you go.

p.s. Disregard the temps - I hadn't reset it from prior use on 4 cores.

awesome my m17x at best can maintain 55 watts so i got a little room for 4.5GHz for single thread/gaming I bet that is like 70 watts for full load

I picked a 3940XM/QS sample off Ebay a while back for my m18xr2. Runs at 4.4Ghz(all 4 cores) with level 3 overclock setting and 0(vid, for extra voltage). I can take her up to 4.6(all 4 cores) with a minimal bump in extra voltage. Temps are well within the limits. If you can get a 3 pipe heatsink for you M17 that will help. Also Coollaboratory Ultra is showing so excellent numbers when used over IC7. Checkout the thread in the M18x forum

In any event that Liquid Ultra is looking like the way to go. We've been seeing some ridiculously low temps with stupidly high overclocks. I ordered myself some last night.

Why are you topping out at 3.8 ghz single thread? After BCLK modding and intel XTU, I can hit 4.1ghz single thread and 3.91ghz on all 4 cores reliably in my m17x.... Hard to justify going from 3720qm to 3920xm for the price that they are at.

the whole single thread speeds is a load of crap btw...never works I can get 3.9Ghz with fsb but that is it

    UPDATE:
Well i just snagged a 3920XM OEM for $330 :D That is a fine price. It will be another year or so before it hits that price for the norm so i am happy. (my 920xm is still like 250-300 -_-) Now i will get to enjoy the XM chip for 2-2.5 years before i throw this baby out :) 4 full years of use out of this :) (cannonlake upgrade 10nm :D)So maybe with everything i have bought from spare battery, CPU, PSU, SSD, and extra ram i have spent ~2400 so ~800 a year minus salvage. Expensive but i did get the laptop for like 1 grand off :)

there was one left on ebay so just ebay it and you can get the last one

now i need to modify my BIOS :/

EDIT: TboneSan what is the max overclock do people typically get for it? (stability...ignoring cooling.) i wonder if i could push 5Ghz in some ghetto set up just to place single threaded games. Wanted to try to see single thread only stability and TDP :D

    @HopelesslyFaithful: THAT'S AN AWESOME PRICE BRO :D
Whew. Really nice. Afaik, 4.3-4.5Ghz is the average max you can expect, and i know Mr. Fox managed something like 4.8Ghz (he's the person you should be asking about ivy bridge mobile overclocks, imo). So what's your current laptop bro?

m17x R4 I think i can get 55w TDP without hitting TJ max which means i might get 4.5-5Ghz on single thread so i am crossing my fingers. Want that 5ghz for gaming so badly. I might blow off the desktop to save money if i can hit 4.8-5GHz i doubt a broadwell chip at 5.5ghz water cooled will have such an improvement it is worth while to build a whole desktop.

well i am getting steady 55w TDP at 78-91C across cores...it ranges with max difference of 11c....i need to fittle with the screws. 3.8GHz So i should be able to get some 4.5-5Ghz just fine....just need to unlock BIOS...such a waste of time.

Also my temps could be worse or better...i tried Heat-Spring with ICD :/ not sure if it had helped.
