You probably have 2 modules of 512 MB. So, for you to upgrade to 2 GB, you will have to upgrade to 2 modules of 1 GB. You should be able to sell the modules you have now, and then be able to buy some new modules. Having said that, unless you play games alot, or use applications that use alot of RAM, then you don't really need 2 GB of RAM.

I'm an engineering student, I use it for some pretty ram-intensive programs. Any brand suggestions, also it should be 667 right? what is latency, and does anyone know if one of the sticks is soldered in?

simply click "scan my system" on the right of the page.

It will tell you what RAM you have in your PC and what you could upgrade to.

Let us know exactly what RAM you have currently. it will help others advise if you wish.

If you use stuff like AutoCAD and Rhinoseros, then definitely go for the 2GB of RAM. We need to know your laptop specs. If you CPU FSB is running at 667Mhz then you should get RAM running at 667Mhz.

Latency is the number of Clock Cycles that go by from when the CPU sends a request to the RAM, and the RAM sends it back to the CPU. I believe a lower latency is better (I'm not too sure) and I think the standard for RAM in laptops in CL5...

    The sticks are easily removable.

    Laptop Specs: T7200, 7200 rpm 60gig, 512mb NVIDIA Quadro® FX 350M, 2 512MB sticks of 667MHz.

I run stuff more complex than AutoCad, its 3D modeling software, Pro/E, and Solidworks.

If you are using RAM intensive applications, then you should go with 2 GB. I recommend going for some reputable brands, such as Crucial, OCZ and Kingston. Some people say they haven't had problems with cheaper RAM, but there is still the chance it may not work. As Lil Mayz has mentioned, you should go with 667 Mhz memory. It won't hurt if you go with 533 Mhz RAM. I think the CL value for most 533 Mhz memory is 4 (at least mine is). I'm not sure if this is different with 667 Mhz.
