Didn't know where else to put this question, which is becoming increasingly a concern to me after looking at a large variety of laptops in the past week.
As a General Rule, which is better:
1] Get extended service agreement from a big place like Circuit City or Best Buy
    OR
2] Get insurance / service agreement from some third party company -- if there is such a thing?

I'm concerned about things such as the following:
Possibility of damage from dropping, stuff just konking out after about 3 minutes past the manufacturers warranty, and a few other possible problems.

This subject has me really stumped.

Thanks again to everyone here for the help.:confused2:

you sound like a good candidate for an extended warranty from the manufacturer..... if that's not available from the PC COMPANY, (my new PC came w/ offers from the manufacturer in the box, in EMAIL after registering)

i guess my second choice would be thru CC or BB....

some warrantys will cover ANYTHING... but they cost a bit more....

my last choice would be w/ someone who i cannot get physically locate...

    just my thoughts,

It is possible to get a laptop insured...not sure about the cost though, I have known a few people who has it.

A very popular 3rd party insurance seems to be SafeWare ( www.safeware.com). They cover accidental damage, which not all first-party services do, so they're good in that way. Unforunately, they do NOT cover the parts breakdown, so they should be used in conjunction with a manufacturers warranty, not in place of one. As for stuff conking out days after warranty ends, pretty much nothing you can do there.

When considering cost of insurance into the price of your notebook, you may also want to consider purchasing a semi-rugged notebook like the Panasonic CF-52, 15" with 3 year warranty.

I forgot to mention that the 3 year warranty is included in the price of the notebook, not an additional cost.

Go to www.squaretrade.com. You can pretty much insure anything. It works very well and they have good prices for first time users

If they can't fix it then they'll just reimburse you for the exact price you paid for :)
