I'm not getting any response on the Asus forums so I thought I'd go more general.

Are notebook optical drives more or less interchangeable?

I've got an Asus n80nv-x5, which has (I think) an internal SATA 'tray' drive.

I've been wondering if I can just pop it out and replace it with:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827118027

This Sony slot loading drive. The iffy thing is my drive has a sort of curved/tapered edge...so I'm thinking if it fits at all, this will be sort of recessed in there, or else stick out at the bottom a bit...but that might be okay.

I originally bought this thinking I'd get it with this external Lite On drive, but the one I got didn't work-it would randomly think it didn't have a disc in it (I was iffy on having them ship me a replacement so just returned the drive).

You can most certainly change it out to a blu-ray player yes. Just check which standard you have on your optical device before purschasing a blu-ray player. Some are 12.7mm some are slightly smaller and some slightly thicker.

Thanks! Well, I pulled my drive out last night, and it sure LOOKS like the drive on Newegg. It measures around 12.7mm (I mean not exactly, but I'm almost certain it is a 12.7mm drive...it's just hard to know what they're measuring).

The top of the laptop would stick out over the top of this new drive, but I may just go for it anyway. Wish it was cheaper, but then maybe there was a good reason that Lite On external drive was only $120...
