    Hi,

Due to cost reason I am thinking of buying a bit less expensive Laptop... I have some question related to the thread's subject:

    1. What are the disadvantages if I buy a Laptop which has AMD Turion 64 X2 which is considered to be at par or ideally better than an Intel Core Duo 2 CPU with 667 Mhz. FSB and 4 MB L2 Cache)
    2. Can you kindly provide the model #/CPU# details of the AMD"s processor which meets/exceeds the above criteria
    3. Are there any advantages of going with AMD rather than Intel?
    4. Is there any price difference between the AMD processor (that you are recommending) versus an Intel Processor with the provided specification
    5. The harddisk and the ram are the only 2 things in a laptop that can be replaced/upgraded. Right?

If my budget is around U.K Lbs. 650/ USD $ 1250, what would be your top 3 recommendations (regardless of Make).

BTW, is Toshiba a good make?

Much thanks in advance for your help, reply, and advice.

hmmm? the AMD CPU is slower than the C2D in performance and offers less battery life. Currently there is no AMD CPU that has the ability to match those c2D specs

only advantage is cost, AMD CPUs are cheaper and yes the HD and RAM are usually the only things you can upgrade. you can upgrade stuff like the wireless card but it is usually nto as easy.

    toshiba are generally good

Thanks for the reply. Appreciate it :)

May I request for your top 3 recommendations if your budget was around U.K Lbs. 650 / USD $ 1250?

    Thanks

When budget shopping one thing AMD offers in a IGP is better graphics, that is starting to change with the GMA 965 but watch out for GMA 950. The Turion 64X2 is on par or better than Intel core duo and below, the Core 2 Dual is faster than the AMD!

For $1250 you can get a good system, for $800 here in the States you can get a very nice AMD w/IGP and a lot of RAM, you can even get Core 2 Duo maybe with GMA 965 (X3100).

HP Dell and Toshiba are your best choices I reckon, dunno bout specific models since you havent mentioned screen sizes etc....

Wat Scrappy meant by Intel Dual Core is the Intel Pentium Dual Core which are budget CPUs, the C2Ds are Intel's main range.

I'll never put my faith in an Intel IGP. I love the AMD processors for notebooks because of the Nvidia and/or ATI IGP options that are usually available. I'll take the 6150 GeForce Go over an Intel GMA any day.

Battery life CAN be a concern and frankly someone who is looking for a good, long lasting, business laptop isn't going to care what kind of IGP they've got but I find that for the kind of multimedia laptop I like (office work, music/video, and some older gaming) the AMD machines are hard to beat right now. Battery life is rarely an issue for me as I'm almost always somewhere where I can plug into the wall.

Intel Pentium Dual Core is a stripped down version of Core Duo, which has another (slower) architecture than Core 2 Duo.

My impression of Pentium Dual Core was that it was the same architecture as Core Duo, just with less L2 cache and the lower FSB speed.

    Simply put.

    1. What are the disadvantages if I buy a Laptop which has AMD Turion 64 X2 which is considered to be at par or ideally better than an Intel Core Duo 2 CPU with 667 Mhz. FSB and 4 MB L2 Cache)

Not much of a disadvantage, I doubt you will notice much of a difference at all.

    2. Can you kindly provide the model #/CPU# details of the AMD"s processor which meets/exceeds the above criteria

Well, I'm not sure of an AMD Turion 64 X2 CPU which is more powerful than any of Intels Core Duo or Core 2 Duo offerings.

    3. Are there any advantages of going with AMD rather than Intel?

There really arent any disadvantes/advantages with choosing either.

    4. Is there any price difference between the AMD processor (that you are recommending) versus an Intel Processor with the provided specification

Intel CPU's are generally more expensive than AMD CPU's.

    5. The harddisk and the ram are the only 2 things in a laptop that can be replaced/upgraded. Right?

The CPU, HDD, and RAM are almost always upgradeable.
