I am helping out a friend pick up a notebook and i couldn't help myself but notice: Why are out there so very few notebooks with AMD processors ?
Is it performance, cost, hardware support, something else ?

i think your looking at the wrong place. i look around and see alot of AMD processors. even Dell is catering to AMD's now. its cheaper but not really as fast as intel. but there are alot of AMDs now :D

The core 2 duo is simply the best processor right now

Same why there's so few Mac notebooks, Intel is a much larger company with a much larger marketshare and resources.

AMD X2 equipped notebooks are generally the cheapest 64bit dual core notebooks you can find. But if he is willing to pay more than $700~800 then Intel Core2 has the best performance/money ratio. Therefore I don’t recommend AMD processors unless he is looking for something in the range of $500.
At the same clock speed AMD is slower, produce more heat and consumes more power.
