It seems to have less cache than the turion but it has more Bus that the pentium dual core cpus. Which are the better ones? Also what is better more bus speed or more cache. The laptop will be running with 2 gb of ram

I would consider comparable to a Pentium Dual Core except 64 bit capable. You can't really look at which is “more important” bus or cache you need both. The AMD have “Hyper Transport” which is a bus between CPU and RAM and yes it runs faster than any Intel and in theory has a higher bandwidth. Because of this AMD's are less dependent on large L2 than the Intel's so the AMD's can do more with less up to a point. The TL's (except 50) are the same as Core Duo in performance (but CD is not 64-bit) and Core 2 Duo's are the fastest and 64.

Yes it is a good CPU.

    It's in between a TL-50 and TL-56.
My brother just got a HP DV2412 notebook with a TK-53, and when he ran PCMARK05, he got 2808 or something, but he only ran it once so his lappy is probably better than mine and I have 2GB ram. I got 2815(see sig).

He has the TK-53, 1GB 667Mhz, 160GB, and Nvidia 6150. For some odd reason, on the transparent window test, he got like 1440 windows/sec while I only got 138.529556 w/s. I think that has to do with Vista or something.

    Hello,

This is my first post on this board as I am quite curious with feedback of my new purchase.

    I ordered a Dell Inspiron 1501 with
    AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 Dual-Core Mobile Technology TK-53
15.4 inch Wide Screen XGA Display with TrueLife™
    1GB DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHz, 2 Dimm
    ATI RADEON® Xpress1150 with 256MB HyperMemory™
    120GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
    8X CD/DVD Burner (DVD+/-RW) with double-layer DVD+R write capability
    Dell Wireless 1390 802.11g Mini Card (54Mbps)
85 WHr 9-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery

I purchased this on sale for $569 Canadian which I found to be quite a deal. Similar laptops sell for about $799 as per my research.

    Here comes the question:
I'm an IT Consultant presently using a Pentium 4 1.8GHz desktop with 768MB RAM and 16MB NVIDIA Vanta graphics card.

    • Is this Dell system good, and good enough to use as a replacement PC and not upgrade my desktop? I have considered building myself a Core2Duo desktop, but thought I'd take advantage of this laptop deal.
    • Should I try to resell this laptop and spend some more towards a better machine?
    • What is a good spec for someone doing general office tasks, remote desktop control, some web and graphic design?

I should add that I'm usually an Intel guy, but saw this AMD deal that looked good. I thought I'd purchase this for mobile use and not upgrade my current desktop which I have considered doing for quite a while.

It should work fine as a replacement for what you mentioned. 2GB RAM is more fun.

Thanks for the prompt reply. I also considered bumping the RAM up to 2GB after I had made the order. The system is only capable of 2GB RAM as far as I know.
Do you (or other users) have experience with Dell laptops or Dual-Core CPUs or AMD's in particular?

That is an excellent deal that you have there. For your fairly basic uses this will be just great. Believe me this will absolutely blow your Pentium 4 desktop out of the water. If you have never used a dual core processor before (whether Intel or AMD) you will be pleasantly surprised at the speed, especially when having multiple tasks running at once. I would, as posted above, recommened getting another GB of RAM but that is because of Vista not because of AMD. Good luck and happy computing!

I think good you did not order extra RAM from DELL, in US NewEgg has 2GB for about $80 US.

    I have the 1.6 w/twice the L2 cache (TL-52) I think it's great.

Thanks very much for the extra feedback and info. When I looked earlier in the week I think it would cost me about $90-95 to buy 2 -1GB DIMMs and then I can resell the ones that Dell ships to off-set the cost.

The system is shipping with Windows XP Home which I will likely upgrade to XP Pro. I didn't think it warranted an extra $90 to get a factory-installed copy of XP Pro.

As far as Vista is concerned, I tried RC1 on my current P4 desktop and I was not impressed. I recently did some work for someone on a Toshiba C2D T5300 with 2GB of RAM I believe, and I enjoyed the experience; however the start-up time was quite disappointing.

w/XP you will be OK w/1GB but 2GB is so very much more fun, enjoy.
