There's quite a few different Pentium M processors clocked at 1.6 GHz.

Both processors are equally obsolete this day and age. Hope you don't plan on buying a laptop with one of those processors.

sorry actually it is a 1.6GHz Intel M725 Dothan processor compared to a AMD Mobile Athlon XP-M 2000+

The Dothan is more powerful when comparing at stock frequencies. Depending on when the Thoroughbred was made, it may have unlocked multipliers so it can be readily overclocked, but it will take a lot to close the performance gap.

Yes. When AMD say 2000+ they basically mean it is equivalent to a 2GHz+ P4. The Pentium M is a good amount faster.

Yeah. Dothan came out almost two years after Thoroughbred.

I've used both of them in the past and I can say that they are about the same. The intel has three advantages though:
1- The M725 has a DTP of 27W and and Athlon XP-M has a DTP of 45W. In other words the M725 is cooler.
2- The M725 has a better battery life (this is often true but not always true, since different laptops have different batteries with different capacities).
3- A laptop with the M725 and the intel 845/855 chipset can be easily upgradable to an M735 (1.7Ghz), M745 (1.8GHz), M755, and M765. If the chipset is a i915 it can be upgraded to the M740, M750, M760, or M770. Now if you have an i845/855 chipset and want a silent laptop you ca actually still use a Pentium M 740 for the upgrade. The M740 has an initiall speed of 1.73Ghz (13 * 133). With the i845/855 chipset it will downclock to 1.3Ghz (13 *100). I had one of this CPU on my old Acer TravelMate for over a year. In addition to the M740 I undervolted my Acer with RMclock; result the laptop was running so cool that the fan did not have to spin to cool it down.

Above I've focussed on the M740 because it is widely spread and because you can buy one from ebay for cheap.
The Athlon XP-M might be upgraded too, but that would depend on the laptop you have (or you're planning to buy). I could not upgrade the one I had in my laptop (Compaq N1015v) since the Athlon XP-M 2000+ I had was already the fastest CPU avalaible for my laptop.
