"7.1 channel stereo sound" and the other has "two channel high definition audio codec and 2 stereo 2 watt internal speakers w/ HD audio 2.0 software."

I'm just not really sure of the significance of these different features.

    Can anyone help me? Thanks...

    7.1 is not stereo.
I would go for HD audio.

Ah, thank you! This is the only diffference I see between the Dell Inspiron 1420 and the Dell Vostro 1400 - the Vostro has the HD, so I guess that's the way to go. Thanks so much!

But I do wonder why Dell lists the Inspiron as having "7.1 channel stereo sound", you know?

Probably just a mistake. Stereo is 2 channel.
Get 7.1 for movies and games, HD stereo for music.

Thanks - what if you were using it equally for movies/games and for music?

Do you own a 7.1 surround setup? That means...do you have 7 speakers, a subwoofer and an appropriate receiver. The 7.1 card only benefits you, when using it with a 7.1 setup.

IMHO youre better off with the HD stereo
