I am going to buy a laptop in the near future (probably a Dell XPS M1210). There is a minimal cost increase to upgrade from 5400rpm to 7200rpm harddrive. I would like the extra speed. But my question is if the 7200 will get noticable warmer and/or make more noise than the 5400rpm.

    Thanks.

I went from a 4200rpm hd to a 7200 and the hd was a lot cooler. It has a lot to do with how often the hard drive is seeking not how fast its turning. A faster hard drive is seeking less so it stays cooler in most cases. As for noise, it will be a little bit louder but not very noticable at all. I have a Hitachi travelstar and theres a boot program you can download from their site and burn to a disk to set the drives noise level. If you set it on silent it is silent but it gets a little bit warmer. Personally I didnt care about noise so I left it on loud and it stays a little bit cooler. Hope this helps.
