My girl's macbook has been kinda sluggish lately. She asked me if there was a way to make it faster. A quick Google search revealed her macbook's max RAM capacity is 2gb. So I thought maybe we can upgrade the hard drive to a solid state drive. Is that possible? If so, what do you guys recommend we buy?

It depends when in 2009 the Mac Book was purchased but mostly like 4 GB if it's DDR2, and 8 GB DDR3 if it's very late 2009

As for the SSD, I would wait as they are going to release 10.7 soon which supposedly have TRIM support, as 10.6 Snow Leopard does not support TRIM = shortened SSD life.

Do you think we should take it to Apple for them to upgrade the RAM if it is possible?

All you have to do is take the bottom panel off(8 screws). Check out this teardown: MacBook Unibody Model A1342 Teardown - iFixit

And once the bottom panel is removed, the hard drive is there too.
