Sorry if the questions will look stupid, but i have a laptop, which have 2 ram slots, so basicaly it can handle 2gb of ram as the spec describes, but i noticed 2gb sticks on the market, so i thought can my laptop handle 2 sticks with each one 2gb, so 4 gb at all? Thanks in advance

What's the specific model of laptop? If it takes DDR it will take a max of 2GB, if it takes DDR2, it will take either 4, 6, or 8GB, depending on the chipset and BIOS limitations.

if it's DDR, it can take 2x1GB, if it's DDR2 it can take 2x4GB (if the BIOS supports it), if it's DDR3 it can take 2x8GB (in a few weeks IIRC).

It can be all from 2GB up to 8GB if you have DDR2 and not minimum 4GB because of DDR2. It all depends on the specific notebook.

I googled a little and intel says 2GB max. So there you go.

Your notebook has intel gl960 chipset:

Games today really dont use that much ram. A good amount of ram is 3-4gb, even 2gb will be enough for now. Not many applications or GAMES use 8gb or more ram. Feel free to name some if you can.

I'd laugh if someone put 8GB of RAM in that laptop. The RAM alone would cost 800 bucks, probably twice what the laptop cost originally :p

The chipset in that laptop actually will limit you to 6.8GB of RAM anyway, so 2x2GB is really your highest realistic limit.

Thanks for such a useful answers, sure 8gigs is far too big for today, however to put 8gigs is not so expensive in my country (Lithuania, Europe) it would cost abou 150 dollars... But looking into future, even 6,8gb is really good to. And laptop is not for gaming :) Thanks again, i really like this forum, for such a good conversation mood :)

I noticed that on my laptop spec. is written that it handles max ram banwitch of 667mhz, but i've got 1gb ram stick that has 800mhz, that's quite strange and interesting and good :)

And i have another question related with my chipset... I read in this forum about changing processors for laptop like that, but i missunderstand can it handle c2d processors? The mainboard chipset is Intel Crestline GML GL960. I don't think to change processor, but just want to know for my curiosity :)

I do wonder where you found that the notebook has P965 chipset?

Because i found GL960, and now he also says GL960 ?

So 2GB is max here. As i already stated before, intel data sheet for intel GL 960 http://ark.intel.com/chipset.aspx?familyID=26558

You seem to be very very generous on how much ram it can take :D

2GB is max ram for your laptop and nothing else.

As you say, your notebook has GL960, and gl960 supports maximum of 2GB according to intel.

Hate to crash the party, but the Acer Extensa has the Intel GL960 Express chipset.

It has a 2GB RAM limit.

My question is somewhat similar: my Acer 3202 TRavelmate is supposed to have 2 slots, so i bought 2 chips -- on opening it I could only find one slot. Am I blind or is the info incorrect?

On some laptops the other ram-slot may sit on another place in the laptop. So maybe it's something like that?

    Well, it could:
    1. Not even boot up the system (it won't break anything)
    2. It will boot up, but will only see 2GB.
    3. It will boot up, but will only see 3GB.
    4. It will boot up and work with all 4GB.

Though, the most probable scenario is 1 or 2, as intel states 2GB max, so. No reason to try more than that if you can't borrow just for testing purpose.

The P965 can address upto 8GB without any problems. The NP9262 has probably got some OS issues, because one user got the whole 8GiG addressed by installing an OS other than XP/Vista. (There is a long thread in the Clevo forum about it)

The GL960 can support upto 3GB, with 2GB+1GB installed in a specific slot pattern. You can play it safe and just go with 2GiG, which is good enough for day-to-day use. If I remember correctly, a GL960 notebook kept on BSODing or locks up within the first minute of windows startup with 4GiG installed (there was BIOS support for 4GB).
