My old laptop was Thinkpad T41. I have many software installed, such as virtual pc, chat software, office, viruscan etc. My main tasks include running an ecommerce site, a forum site, and daily business involving offices.

I do not quite understand the RAM usage. My current RAM Booster shows that out of 1534MB ram, only 900MB RAM are available when it's idle, meaning some softwares are standby in the system tray... But still that is a lot of Ram usage.

I do have some crashes from time to time with this 1.5GB memory.

I don't know much about what originally come with Thinkpad, but I bet there must be some problem with them and I don't know how to clean them.

I have just placed an order for ASUS Z63A, and I was wondering if I should order 1GBx1 or 1GBx2 memory. Could you please give me some advice? I heard people saying the second GB memory does not improve much, not like another time faster, is that true?

    Thank you very much!

ram doesn't necessarily make a computer faster. it allows you to have more stuff running without experiencing a slowdown. so, if you have a lot of ram, everything on the desktop is quickly accessible, if you have a lower amount of ram, it may take longer to access items because ram is unloading and loading new data. in any case, more ram is usually better, but depending on the usage you listed, i don't think you'll see much difference between 1-2 gbs.

i'm not sure what RAM Booster is.

Thanks for your explaination. RamBoosters is a software that you can download and monitor your ram usage, and it can do some simple optimization on Ram.

So do you think I should go with 1GBx1 or 1GBx2 in this case?

Thank you. So that means at any time, my laptop would have 1000MB - 660MB = 340MB left.

If you get 1x1GB and find it too little, you can easily upgrade it yourself later on. It is cheaper if you purchase RAMs and do the upgrade yourself.
