I just bought a samsung 19" LCD TV as use for a monitor with my familys desktop. However, the icons and the screen size is way too big. Everything looks magnified. I am currently on 1024x768, and the only other option I have is 800x600. Is there a way to get everything to appear smaller and look normal on this screen? I tried the display properties advanced tabs but can't seem to figure out what to do.

If you are looking to change the resolution, you are looking in the right area. If windows only lets you run 1024x 768 or 800 x 600, then you should either download new drivers for your graphics card, or buy a new graphics card if the system cannot support higher resolutions than 1024 x 768. This is most likely the case if you are using integrated graphics.

What kind of video card does the desktop have? It sounds like a driver update could fix your resolution issue.

Do you know where I can find out the type of video card it is?
Would it be under device manager somewhere?

I found a display adapter that says VIA/S3G Unichrome IGP, is that it?
This is an HP Pavillion a700n running on amd athlon 3000+

You have an integrated graphics card. You would need to buy an add in graphics card if you want higher resolution.

You can always decrease the size of the fonts and icons, but that will not help out much.

Your desktop will have an open AGP port, which usually are the brown ports next to the processor. I dont know how thick your case is, but you can get a good low profile agp graphics card like a nvidia 6200 for like $45. I have one and it runs 2048 x 1536 resolution fine.
This card is cheap and it will run the screen at a much higher resolution:
For $38 you cant get a much better graphics card. It has no fan, just passive cooling, it runs cool in my experiences, and it is quiet. (I do not know why Zipzoomfly lists the max res as 1024 x 768, it is 2048 x 1536, every other site says that, and I bought the exact card from zzf and it runs 2048 x 1536.

Or you can get it here for $36 and shipping:

What you need are drivers for your video card. You don't need a new card to get a higher resolution, the one you have is more than capable.

Thats what I was thinking, but where do I find drivers?
I don't know the video card type, so what do I do to find that out and than look for drivers. This desktop is pretty basic but only 3 years old, I would think it has more than 2 types of resolution settings.

The VIA VIA/S3G Unichrome IGP does NOT support widescreen resolutions so 1024 x 768 is the highest it will go for that specific LCD.

No, there are no drivers for the Unichrome integrate graphics that will add support for widescreen resolutions so dont even bother trying to looks.

YES, This is a major issue with VIA UniChrome intergrated graphics.

You need a new videocard. The one k-tron posted will be fine. You can get it cheaper on ebay.

What kind of connection are you using to connect to the tv?
