Would prefer a 4k@120Hz monitor instead... personally 3K@120Hz is good enough...

    Same.. I'm waiting for 4k 120hz to be a thing before I upgrade from 1080p 144hz.

Though as stated above, I would prefer a 3k 17" display..

Seems kind of unnecessary... like a spec-war of digital camera megapixels or gaming mouse DPI.

There isn't any content that's 8K (and barely any content that's 4K for that matter). DPI scaling in Windows would be horrible. It's about the same DPI as a 5.7" 2560x1440 smartphone screen. So imagine that crispness, scaled up to a 17" monitor. In a few years, you'll probably see Apple releasing an iPad Pro Plus or something like that, just to try and enter the larger-is-better mentality that seems to have gripped the Android market.

So when is flat-screen monitor technology going to catch up to CRT?

I signed up because it's time to upgrade my system and I am planning on a laptop instead of a desktop. I have never owned a non-CRT monitor. Does this mean when I get a laptop the screen won't be able to play my original games beautifully?

The only technology that can match CRT is CNT-FED, but it is nowhere to see but a few presentation slides and prototypes. Second best - MEMS displays. BTW what CRTs do you have?

Right now I have 3 generic CRT monitors: a KDS, a Sylvania F912, and a ViewSonic G90f. They aren't the best monitors, a Sony/Dell Trinitron 21" as I understand it is one of the best monitors to get.

Uhm... what do you mean by this? Of course you can play your games. Tens of millions if not hundreds of millions do so on a regular basis.

Nice! Yep, SONY's last CRTs are the best of them all - the one and only 16:10 - GDM-FW900 (I have one, looking to make them two, or maybe three :D), the Artisan - GDM-C520K (you didn't have to sacrifice response time for color accuracy back in the day, like it still is (in most cases) today with LCDs), and Artisan's little brother - GDM-F520, as well as the rebrands, with HP and DELL badge, which (model numbers) I don't know.

You can now get desktop monitors with very good gaming potential at 144hz with IPS with no colourshift via over drive and grey to grey response times below the frame rate.

Acer X34 is a good example.
