I'm choosing between a Thinkpad T420 and T520 and the only thing that is bothering me is the screen space. I will be using this laptop for heavy programming at school and at home. I know that I can upgrade the T520 to 1920X1080 but it costs $250 extra!

So I'm wondering how much screen space do I actually gain between a 14" and 15.6" at same resolution? Is the extra screen space worth the extra weight?

not too sure what you're asking....the bigger screen is physically bigger, but they will show the same amount of information

Yeah ... exactly. If you're near a computer store, go look, see the difference for yourself. The 14" laptop will be more portable.

$250 to upgrade to the 1080p screen is very expensive unless it is some higher quality panel (e.g. IPS or 90%+ gamut). You could get an 18.5-21.5" 1080p external monitor for less than that.

No extra screen space, but the T520's 1600x900 screen is noticeably better quality.
